Killer deer virus has spread into Ingham County

By Randy Stine Sep 17, 2026 | 9:50 AM

LANSING, MI — A fast spreading virus that can kill deer has been detected across southern Michigan, including Ingham and Jackson Counties. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has confirmed cases of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) virus in free-ranging white-tailed deer in the area.

The virus can kill deer in a matter of days, the DNR says. The virus is spread through the bites of infected midges, also known as biting flies. There is no threat to human populations. They says wet conditions can cause large hatches of the biting flies.

Once infected, deer can become lethargic, develop a high fever, and experience severe internal bleeding that can cause the eyes, head and neck to swell. Blood can also appear around the nose and mouth. The DNR asks anyone who spots a suspected case on their property to report it immediately using the agency’s online wildlife health system.
