PORTLAND, MI — A 50-year-old man and his five-year-old granddaughter fell through ice on Wednesday in Clinton County and drowned. Police says the incident took place northeast of Portland when a man and young girl ventured onto ice at a pond and apparently fell through.
The man was identified as Eric Miles of Portland. The young girl has not been identified. The pair were recovered from the water and taken to University of Michigan Health-Sparrow in Lansing, where they later were pronounced dead.
Police were dispatched to the 9000 block of Clintonia Road in Westphalia Township shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
