EAST LANSING, MI — Michigan State University President Kevin M. Guskiewicz today announced Jon Palumbo as the university’s interim director of intercollegiate athletics.
Palumbo’s appointment is effective immediately with the announcement of J Batt’s impending departure from the university. Guskiewicz says he will consider internal and external candidates in his search for a permanent AD.
“Jon has been an integral part of the innovation of MSU Athletics over the past year, and I have every confidence in his ability to maintain its positive trajectory as interim athletic director,” said Guskiewicz. “This will be a seamless transition for MSU Athletics, and we look forward to a successful start of the upcoming season for our programs and student-athletes.”
He continued: “This is an exciting time for MSU Athletics, and I am happy to share this news with the Spartan community,” said Guskiewicz. “Over the coming weeks and months, I look forward to evaluating options, both internal and external, for a candidate to permanently fill the AD position.”
Palumbo currently serves as MSU’s executive deputy athletics director and chief operating officer and holds the additional role of CEO of Spartan Ventures. Palumbo will continue in his role with Spartan Ventures and designate an appointee to fill the board position held by the athletic director for the duration of his time as interim.
Prior to his arrival in East Lansing, Palumbo was at Georgia Tech, where he worked closely with J Batt to elevate Georgia Tech Athletics through the implementation of several strategic initiatives and key coaching hires. He joined MSU in November of 2022 as executive deputy athletics director and chief operating officer.
