HOLT, MI — The two MDOT employees were struck and killed in a work zone by an SUV in the northbound lanes of U.S. 127 shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. The crash happened just north of Holt Road in Mason.
According to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office a vehicle being driven by a 24-year-old Dewitt man lost control and struck two MDOT workers, a 49-year-old Mason man and a 51-year-old Mason man. Both of the MDOT workers died on scene. The unidentified Dewitt man was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
MDOT has not released the names of its two employees who were killed.
Rob Coppersmith, executive vice president of the Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association (MITA), is asking drivers to slow down in work zones.
“MITA is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two MDOT workers killed in a work zone crash on US-127. Our hearts go out to their families, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time. Work zones are not just traffic delays – they are someone’s workplace. Someone’s neighbor. Someone’s family member,” Coppersmith said in a statement.
“We will continue to advocate for stronger work zone safety measures, increased enforcement, and the resources needed to protect every worker on every project across Michigan.”
