KALAMAZOO, MI — Eleven tornadoes were reported Tuesday in western Michigan, according to the National Weather Service. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has issued a state of emergency for Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, Branch, and Cass counties after two tornadoes were confirmed in Portage. Another tornado was reported in Union City, south of Battle Creek. Several other possible tornados are under investigation.
Mid-Michigan was mostly spared from heavy damage as storms swept through the area Tuesday evening.
Over 170 homes were damaged at the Pavilion Estates Mobile Home Community and several destroyed in Portage, according to Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller.
Consumers Energy reported about 24,000 customers without power across the state as of early Wednesday.
