LANSING, MI — MDOT is beginning a project on I-96 that will cause headaches for those who commute daily on I-96 from Grand Rapids to the Lansing area. The year’s long project involved eight miles of road from Sunfield to Bliss Roads in Ionia County. Most drivers would agree that stretch of road is terrible.
The transportation department says demolition work on the Jordan Lake Road bridge over I-96 started this week. This year’s work will include temporary widening and installing crossover lanes in preparation for the actual rebuilding work in 2025 and 2026. All traffic will be shifted to eastbound lanes of I-96 in 2025 and the reverse in 2026.
That stretch of road has seen a patchwork of temporary fixes through the years, according to MDOT. This will be the first total rebuild of the highway – at a total cost of $105 million – since it was resurfaced with recycled concrete in 1986. that has led to a very unlevel driving experience.
