EAST LANSING, MI — Michigan State University women’s basketball coach Suzy Merchant is stepping down. The 53-year-old says she is leaving due to health reasons.
Merchant has not been active as a coach since being in a car accident in early January. Assistant coach Dean Lockwood has served as the Spartans’ interim head coach. The Spartans finished the season 16-14 overall and 7-10 in the Big Ten conference.
The MSU women were extended an invitation to play in the woemen’s Natioanl Invitational Tournament (NIT) but Spaprtans players voted to not play in the post season.
