LANSING, MI — About 300 abortion-rights activists rallied at the State Capitol in downtown Lansing on Tuesday after a leak of an internal U.S. Surpreme Court memo shows the court appears ready to overturn Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion nationwide in 1973.
Abortion rights activists are planning to launch a petition to put the question on the November ballot in Michigan to keep it legal. The ACLU of Michigan and Planned Parenthood are both supporting the petition drive, which needs 425-thousand signatures by July 11. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, Michigan’s 1931 law banning all abortions will take effect again.
