EAST LANSING, MI — Former Michigan State University Police Captain Valerie O’Brien will not be doing any jail time for a drunk driving arrest, according to media partner WLNS TV-6 in Lansing.
O’Brien was sentenced Monday to 12 months probation for drunk driving, but also received a $700 fine, mandatory counseling and 40 hours of community service.
WLNS reports Judge Richard Hillman in East Lansing District Court said that due to her going into inpatient rehabilitation and her continuing commitment to rebab, he was not ordering any jail time.
O’Brien was charged with one count of operating a motor vehicle with a high blood alcohol content (BAC), and one count of carrying a concealed pistol under the influence with a BAC of 0.10 or more following her arrest in February 2021.
A blood test later revealed O’Brien had a BAC of 0.251, which is well above the high BAC limit of 0.08 set by Michigan law.
