MACKINAC ISLAND (WKZO) -- A report on the ESPN-owned website Grantland.com this week claimed that Miami Heat forward Shane Battier was approached by the Michigan Democratic Party in an effort to get him to run for the United States Senate seat left vacant by the retiring Carl Levin.

On Wednesday the leader of the Michigan Democratic Party, Lon Johnson, said he knew nothing of the claims. Battier, who is nearing retirement, grew up in Birmingham and was the state's Mr. Basketball winner in 1997 before starring at Duke.

Republican candidate Terri Lynn Land is now using the report as a tactic to sway voters to her side saying she is not surprised the Democrats made an effort to "cut" nominee Gary Peters in favor of Battier.
