Representative Miller opposes flood insurance measure

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO) -- Congresswoman Candice Miller of Michigan says that reauthorizing what she calls a flawed National Flood Insurance Program is a mistake and she wants Governor Snyder to opt Michigan out of it altogether.

Miller says the program is 25-billion dollars in debt because politics sets the rates not actuarial costs. As a result, she says, too many people pay rates below what they should given their risk while others, like many in Michigan, are forced to pay into a program they don't need to in order to subsidize those lower rates.

Miller says she wants the governor to "seek a state or private alternative that stops forcing Michigan homeowners to serve as ATM machines for the rest of the nation."
