Meijer program tests for flu, strep throat in pharmacies

WALKER (WKZO) -- Meijer is testing a program to do more in the way of health care at its pharmacies. The retail chain is working with Ferris State University and the University of Nebraska on a study regarding diagnostic testing on site in pharmacies to do tests for strep throat and influenza.

Meijer's Karen Mankowski says that means some could come to pharmacists when feeling ill and possibly seek treatment without having to schedule an appointment with their physician.

"We can do a physical exam-- like temperature and blood pressure-- do some physical observation, and then administer a flu test or a strep test... and let you know if test positive or negative," Mankowski told Michigan's Big Show with Michael Patrick Shiels. "Then in select stores, working with a physician, we can give you the medication that you need to get better."

Because it's part of a study, that comes at no cost to those seeking treatment. Locations offering the service are listed on Meijer.com.
