Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander throws to the Baltimore Orioles during the fifth inning of their MLB American League baseba

Tigers officials say pitcher Justin Verlander is expected to be sidelined for six weeks after undergoing successful core muscle repair surgery yesterday.  Verlander had been dealing with the abdominal issue for some time, and he aggravated the injury during conditioning drills late last month and told the team's training staff it was still bothering him earlier this week.  He will be re-evaluated after six weeks of rehabilitation, and team officials believe he will be ready to pitch on Opening Day.  The Tigers first Grapefruit League game is slated for February 26th against the Braves, and Detroit will host the Kansas City Royals in the regular season opener on March 31st.
