Detroit bankruptcy judge says counties can object to debt plan

DETROIT (WKZO) -- U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes has ruled three counties can object to the City of Detroit's plan to reduce debt. Rhodes has ruled that Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties do have a legal standing in the matter.

Oakland and Macomb officials have objected a city plan to use 428-million dollars in pension payments for the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department over the next ten years. Suburban officials say those higher costs will be passed on to customers of the DWSD.

Rhodes is also considering adding a deadline for an agreement between the city and two public safety unions.
