Governor Snyder signs scrap metal bill into law

DETROIT (WKZO) -- Compromise legislation aimed at cracking down on the sale of illegally obtained scrap metal in Michigan is now the law.

Governor Rick Snyder Thursday signed the bill that requires payment by mail to sellers who bring in more than 25-dollars worth of copper wire, catalytic converters, or air conditioning units. Andy Arena with the Detroit Crime Commission says the restrictions could go further, but are a step in the right direction.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau recently ranked the state tenth for scrap metal insurance claims and the crime of illegal scrapping nearly tripled from 2011 to 2012, according to Michigan State Police.
