General Motors CEO apologizes for safety problems

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO) -- General Motors CEO Mary Barra is apologizing for GM's safety problems. Faulty ignition switches are blamed for more than a dozen deaths in the U.S. and Canada over more than a decade.

In a House hearing, Barra said GM will "do the right thing." Barra, who took the helm of GM in January, vowed to find out why it took GM so long to deal with the problem. The problem has prompted a massive recall.

Opening the hearing, Pennsylvania Republican Tim Murphy said both GM and federal regulators have a lot to answer for. Colorado Democrat Diana DeGette said the recall should have been ordered years ago. She cited GM documents showing how a "simple fix" could have been done for less than a dollar per car.
