Attorneys ask judge to stay Detroit lawsuits

DETROIT (WKZO) -- The legal battle between the 36th District Court in Detroit and a local union may be settled by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes.

Attorneys for the City of Detroit filed a brief asking Rhodes to extend the stay of lawsuits due to the Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing.  City attorneys say any judgments or awards entered against the court would be judgments against the city.

At issue is a lawsuit filed by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 25 who sued the district court after employees were terminated.  A lawsuit won by the union calls for the district court to pay 5.5-million dollars in back pay for the former officers.
