No happy returns, Ross cut

Monday September 23, 2013 - via Mark Daniels:

It was one muff too many. Jeremy Ross' mishandled kickoff return yesterday was the last straw. General Manager Ted Thompson released Ross today. Racing up to field a short kickoff after the Packers fell behind 7-0, the second year player muffed it and the Bengals recovered at the two. One snap later, BenJarvus Green-Ellis scored to make it 14-0. Ross misplayed a punt in last year's divisional playoff game in San Francisco that also proved costly. He appeared in 8 games over the past two years, averaged 17.9 yards on 9 kickoff returns. He had a solid 20.5 average on six punt returns, when he caught it. Ross also had one career catch for 8 yards.

So who's next? Unlikely the Packers will hold auditions over the bye week but they may sign a new street free agent returner. The team has been hesitant to use Randall Cobb on special teams now that he's a feature receiver. But Cobb became the first Packer to return both a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns in his first two seasons and is clearly the best on-roster option. We should learn more talking with special teams coordinator Shaun Slocum this afternoon.
