Formal charges filed in Michigan State Police Trooper's murder

IRONS (WKZO) -- Prosecutors in Mason County have formally charged a 19-year-old man with the murder of Michigan State Police trooper Paul Butterfield.  Officials say Eric Knysz and his 21-year-old wife, Sarah Knysz, were in a pickup truck belonging to the shooter's father when they were stopped.

Knysz allegedly got into a shootout with police a short time later about 15 miles away and remains hospitalized, but he is expected to be in court Thursday.  He has a criminal background that includes operating a vehicle while impaired in 2012, license violations, and possession of a weapon in March of this year.  Knysz also was convicted in May on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.

Officials also report that Sarah Knysz is six-months pregnant and faces charges related to fleeing the scene of the shooting.
