Michigan schools may be required to have EpiPens

LANSING (WKZO) -- Legislation being considered in Lansing would mean that all schools in the state would be required to have EpiPens on hand. The bill, introduced by State Representative Lisa Posthumus Lyons would mandate all public schools to stock at least two nonstudent specific EpiPens, which could be used to prevent or stop life-threatening allergic reactions in any student.

Lyons says that when it comes to serious allergic reactions, minutes matter and simple treatments can save lives.

"As a mom, I cannot imagine what parents who have lost their children to food allergies at school have gone through," Lyons says in a statement. "By giving our schools these simple life-saving epinephrine injectors, we can take a big step toward saving lives and keeping our kids safer than ever."

The bill passed in the state House last week.
