MADISON, WI (WKZO) -- Asian carp DNA is in Lake Michigan. The "Milwaukee Journal Sentinel" reports researchers found one water sample taken this year was positive for DNA from the silver carp, which to date had not been found in Lake Michigan.
The sample was taken on May 31st in Sturgeon Bay, north of Green Bay and just a few miles south of the Michigan border. A researcher from the University of Notre Dame tells the newspaper they're not sounding the alarm bells yet as it's "one sample, one time."
Assistant professor Chris Jerde added repeated detections would be cause for concern. Jerde and other Notre Dame researchers have been working with the Department of Natural Resources from both Michigan and Wisconsin this summer testing Lake Michigan for the invasive carp.
