DETROIT (WKZO) -- Brad Ausmus has been chosen to become the new manager of the Detroit Tigers. Less than two weeks after the retirement of Jim Leyland.
Tigers General Manager Dave Dombroski announced the former major league catcher, who played 18 years in the majors, including three with Detroit.
The pick is something of a surprise because the 44-year-old has never been a manager at the major or minor league level. He says he knows a lot about how a clubhouse works because it wasn’t all that long ago that he was in one, as a player.
Leyland led the Tigers to two World Series appearances in eight years with the team. Detroit went 93-and-69 this past season and won the AL Central for the third straight season.
