Opposition to lifetime insurance benefits cap for automobile crashes forms

LANSING (WKZO) -- Groups opposing capping lifetime medical benefits to victims of catastrophic auto crashes in Michigan are coming together.  A Michigan House panel voted last week to pass a one-million dollar lifetime cap for benefits in Michigan, an amount that supporters of the legislation say is still 20-times higher than the next highest cap in the country.

Democratic lawmakers say they intend to oppose the measure as a united front.  It's also thought that at least ten Republican lawmakers actually oppose the insurance reforms.  The bill passed along party lines when the vote was taken on the panel, with ten Republicans voting for the measure and five Democrats against.

In a press release, the Change Agent Consortium says they oppose the bill, as well, citing that hospital costs alone can be quite expensive, and those in catastrophic collisions often require care from multiple specialists over time, adding to costs.
