Michigan lawmakers look at time off bill pushed by Michigan Restaurant Association

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Michigan lawmakers are considering a controversial bill to prohibit local governments from requiring employers to provide paid or unpaid time off for workers. Some Republican legislators do not support the bill they believe will allow local governments to enact ordinances that make employers offer paid leave above what is already required by state or federal law.

The Michigan Restaurant Association suggested the legislation after the last bad flu season saw many workers without paid sick time. Many cities outside of Michigan, including San Francisco, Seattle and D.C. have already enacted similar ordinances.
