Petitions submitted to give Jackson voters a chance to decide whether to decriminalize marijuana

JACKSON -- If all goes as planned, voters in Jackson should get to vote on a measure to decriminalize marijuana in November.

The Jackson County Compassion Club and NORML only needed 354 valid signatures to get on the ballot , but turned they in over 550, just to be sure.

It would decriminalize possession of less than an ounce of grass.

Jackson County Norml Director Steven Sharpe says its another step in the process that they hope will lead to statewide relaxation of Marijuana laws.

In the short term, if it passes, it will help medical marijuana users and free up Jackson Police to pursue more serious crimes and drugs.

Proponents in Lansing also collecting signatures and should have enough to force a vote in the State Capital  by next week.
