Last call for fireworks

Thousands turned out for all the fireworks shows in the area, but if you are still planning your own do-it-yourself show, this evening may be the last chance you will have for a while. Some communities have banned fireworks from all but the days around holidays...and this year some went even further and banned them on the early morning hours of those holidays. Each town may have different rules.

Fireworks may be the most popular way a community marks the 4th of July, but towns like Lansing, Brighton, Mason, Eaton Rapids, and Portland also feature parades, and some towns had daylong festivals. .

In most cases, the object is to salute those who have gone to war, from the Revolution to Afghanistan to win and protect the rights we enjoy.

A group calling itself “Restore the Fourth” were handing out flyers at the Lansing Parade yesterday, protesting government surveillance and calling on the Government to respect the 4th Amendment and stop looking at phone calls and e-mail. They have about a dozen members.
