It may not be the season to worry about your furnace, but State Senator Mike Nofs says it will be here soon enough. This year the state’s poorest residents will have a guaranteed source of revenue to help them heat their homes.
The Governor has signed the bill sponsored by Nofs creating the Low Income Energy Assistance Fund. Rate payers who can afford to pay will see an extra dollar added to their monthly bills to create the 50-million dollar fund.
It will be supplemented by about ten million dollars provided by the federal government.
Utilities can opt out, but if they do, they will be barred from shutting off service to delinquent accounts from November 1st to April 15th,.
