West Michigan man missing, presumed drowned in Lake Michigan

LAKE MICHIGAN (WKZO) -- The search is on for a 47-year-old Walker man who jumped from a boat in the choppy waters of Lake Michigan less than a mile off Ferrysburg Sunday afternoon.  It is now being called a recovery effort and not a rescue.

The Coast Guard reports that a cabin cruiser was making its way back to Grand Haven from Muskegon with 11 on board.  They stopped and asked if anyone wanted to take a swim, and John English said he would.

The wind and currents quickly separated English from the boat.  They tried to throw him a life ring but without success. He struggled and went under.  The Coast Gaurd and local police were immediately notified.

They responded with divers, side-scan radar, and a helicopter and searched until after dark in the 46-foot deep water, without success.  They will try again today.
