LANSING (WKZO) -- Passenger rail service in Michigan may cost more later this year when the state is required to pick up a greater share of the cost for Amtrak.

A new federal mandate will require that the state pay 25-million dollars in a subsidy in addition to the eight-million dollars the state already contributes.

Officials say they will have no choice but to pay the subsidy since passenger service on the Amtrak route from Pontiac to Detroit to Chicago set a record for ridership last year.

The mandate is not sitting well with state legislators including House Speaker Jace Bolger who is critical of the federal government for quote "telling states what to do when they can't get their own job done."

The increase will be in the state budget that begins October 1st.
