Cold weather persists and its taking a toll in lives and health

by

OMAHA (WKZO) -- National Weather Service Meteorologist Andrew Orrison says its cold out there and while it’s only set a few new records. What is different about this cold snap is its enduring nature.  He says there may be some releif in the form of higher temperatures this weekend, at least high enough for road salt to work.

One nice thing about the weather in Michigan is that no matter how bad it gets, its always worse somewhere else. For instance in Minnesota it’s been 30 to 40 below.

So far 4 deaths are being blamed on the winter blast, including a businessman who died in a chain reaction collision in Muskegon County and a 70-year-old man found frozen in his unheated home in Des Plaines, Illiniois.

There are also plenty of walking wounded out there. Dr. david Rossi is an emergency room physician at Borgess Hospital. He says they have been seeing a lot of victims of slip and fall accidents, and contrary to the stereo-type, they come in all sizes and ages.

He says the injuries range from the minor sprains to serious fractures.

He says folks suffer slip and fall accidents for the same reason that motorists suffer slide offs, they are busy and forget what they are doing and move faster on icy surfaces than is prudent.

The big difference in slip and fall accidents is you aren’t encased in a steel shell when you lose control.
