UNDATED (WKZO) -- Thinking of digging out that driveway, but you haven’t been off the sofa in an ice age? You could be asking for a heart attack.
Dr. Vishal Gupta at Kalamazoo Cardiology says when you exercise in the cold, you are putting an enormous strain on your heart, because your blood pressure goes way up.
He says anyone with a chronic heart or respiratory condition should avoid any attempt to shovel snow, especially in these bitterly cold temperatures.
Even if you are a healthy mature adult it’s a good idea to take small shovelfuls and dress warmly, pace yourself, or better yet, hire a teenager to do it for you.
Kalamazoo City Manager Ken Collard is reminding homeowners that they are responsible for keeping the sidewalks in front of their home cleared of snow. He says it’s not only required, but it’s the neighborly thing to do.
KHe admits it may not be easy for some in weather like this but it should get done.
