Kalamazoo Virologist says flu vaccine isn't as effective as doctors had hoped

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The CDC says the Flu has not yet peaked nationwide, as three more states were added to the list in the most severe category.

It may be because this year’s flu shot seems to be less effective at preventing the flu bug.Health officials have been watching and recording and it appears the shots are only about 60% effective against the major type A and Type B flu strains that are circulating around this year.

Flu vaccines used to be 70 to 90% effective but for the last few years, they have lost some of their protective abilities. Either that or the flu virus have adapted.

Dr, Kareem Essani, a virologist at WMU says it provides no protection from a second B Strain whatsoever.

He still recommends that you get the flu shot. He says it should make the symptoms less severe, and that could be the difference between life and death for an elderly person with health problems.

He says even if you do get the shot, don’t give up on washing your hands and maintaining other healthy habits. It’s partly a matter of luck but you can greatly improve your chances if you work at it.
