Michigan to pay over wrongly downed bison

LANSING (WKZO) -- A northern Michigan farmer will get a thousand bucks from the state because the DNR gave a neighbor permission to shoot and kill the man's pregnant bison.  Gaven Dietzel who raises bison for their beef,  says the animal was being loaded onto a trailer headed for market when she bolted.

A neighbor, seeing the fleeing animal, called the DNR and got permission to shoot figuring he would kill the animal and harvest her meat.  The DNR says the neighbor was given the wrong information by a worker who thought that the same rules applied to a roaming bison as the rules applying to an escaped animal.

Dietzel says the bison would have fetched around 25-hundred at market.  The neighbor who killed the bison paid for half the butchering charges and gave Dietzel half the meat.
