Healthcare workers required to get flu shots and those that don't are fired

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Both Bronson Methodist and Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo require that their employees get a flu shot to protect the patients from the disease as much as possible.

We don’t know if it’s impacted any employees locally but reports are that 15 healthcare workers have lost their jobs in a four state area for refusing to get the shot.

Cancer Nurse Joyce Gingerich was among seven nurses at IU Health Goshen Hospital in Northern Indiana that refused. She was shocked they would terminate them.

Nationally known bioethicist Art Caplan thinks it’s irresponsible for any health care professional not to get the vaccine.

He says they should not take the risk that they could spread the virus to someone very young, very old or vulnerable. Because of the ferocity of the flu outbreak this year, local hospitals are just beginning to restrict patient visitation, all in an effort to limit the risk of exposing patients to the virus.
