CATCH IT: Gun laws generating heat in Grand Rapids

by

UNDATED (WKZO) -- Local firearms laws are at the center of a lively debate for the City of Grand Rapids.

The uproar began Tuesday night at Grand Rapids City Hall during a commission meeting when Mayor George Heartwell scolded Tom Lambert for speaking out of the allowed limits.

Lambert, a Kentwood resident and member of Michigan Open Carry, Inc., was cut off by Heartwell when he tried to speak a second time during the public comment period. Lambert was attempting to introduce a city code amendment that would allow firearms in city hall as well as any public place in Grand Rapids.

Mayor Heartwell told Michael Patrick Shiels on Michigan’s Big Show that he is of the opinion that the city commissioners of Grand Rapids, “do not want guns in public meetings because they suppress free speech.” Heartwell went on to say he is eager to keep guns out of public places because they have a “chilling” effect.

Check out the entire interview above with Mayor Heartwell.

Michigan’s Big Show can be heard on 590 AM/96.5 FM WKZO every weekday morning from 10am -12 pm.
