Man sets ex-wife's apartment in Portage on fire

PORTAGE (WKZO) -- A Kalamazoo Township man is in custody after Portage Public Safety Officers say he trashed the apartment where his ex-wife and three children lives in Portage and then set the place on fire.

The Portage Fire Department got a call at 12-minutes into the New Year that smoke was coming from a unit at the Timberwood Crossing Apartments on Ivywood Street. They arrived and found that the door had been kicked in, the interior was ransacked and a fire was burning in the bedroom. The complex was briefly evacuated.

The occupant arrived and told investigators that she had received a threat from her ex-husband, who soon after called her and threatened suicide while officers were still at the scene.

Portage Public Safety went to the address in Kalamazoo Township where he was staying, and with the help of a crisis negotiator, talked him into surrendering. The 36-year-old suspect was taken to the Kalamazoo County Jail to await arraignment today on home invasion and arson charges.
