Michigan lawmakers considering service taxes

LANSING (WKZO) -- Some state lawmakers are considering levying a sales tax on services to help pay for road repairs.  The idea is being tossed around by some legislative members as business leaders continue to pressure them to approve large increases in gas taxes and vehicle registration fees to generate money for roads.

Taxing services is the latest idea to emerge as lawmakers search for alternatives to Governor Rick Snyder's proposal to hike the 19-cent-per-gallon gas tax and increase motor vehicle registration fees by 60-percent.  Snyder says the increases would generate roughly 1.2-billion dollars more a year for roads and infrastructure improvements.
