Stabenow praises reauthorization of Violence Against Women Act

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTVB) - On this Valentine’s Day 2013, Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow is praising passage in the U.S. Senate this week of reauthorization of the bipartisan Violence Against Women Act. Stabenow says too many women are victims of violence in their own homes and many don’t know where to turn. According to Stabenow, theViolence Against Women Act gives women the support they need to protect themselvesand their children. She adds that preventing violence against women should never be a controversial or partisan issue and she’s proud of the strong bipartisan 78-to-22 vote achieved on the legislation.

She urged the House to follow the Senate’s lead. Senator Stabenow is one of 61 Senate cosponsors of the Violence Against Women Act, which was first authorized in 1994. She says law has provided lifesaving services such as transitional housing to survivors of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The Violence Against Women Act has also made it easier for state and local law enforcement to investigate and prosecute the assailants of these violent crimes.
