The California native portrayed Dr. Mark Greene in the U.S. medical drama until 2002, when he decided to make a change and relocate to New York with his wife Jeanine and their four children.
He tells the Associated Press, ""I didn't really have a plan other than I knew I wasn't going to jump into a series again and I knew that I was really tired and burnt out.""
Edwards ultimately bought a plane and jetted off on a family vacation through Africa, India, and Asia, and he admits it was one of the best experiences of his life - because he got to spend quality time with his son Bailey, and three daughters, Esme, Wallis and Poppy.
He explains, ""I've never met the older man who wishes he had spent less time with his kids while they were young. You don't meet anybody who says, 'God, I wish I had worked harder and was gone more.'""
