State officials: Pontiac schools request premature

PONTIAC (WKZO) -- Officials say a request by the Pontiac Board of Education for a consent agreement with the state to deal with the district's financial crisis is premature.

Last Tuesday, Governor Rick Snyder declared a financial emergency in the district and the board approved a resolution on Friday to choose the consent agreement.  Under state law, the district has seven days from the declaration to request a hearing and a vote to request any of the options, including an agreement with the state or the appointment or an emergency manager, can't be taken until the entire week has passed.

The Pontiac School District has a nearly 38-million dollar deficit, with almost 33-million in unpaid bills to vendors, including its health insurance carrier which dropped coverage for employees last month.
