Michigan Court of Appeals hears wrongful conviction case

DETROIT (WKZO) -- The Michigan Court of Appeals heard arguments Tuesday in a case involving a developmentally disabled man who claims he was wrongfully convicted of murdering four people.

Attorneys for 19-year-old Davontae Sanford say he’s not responsible for the murders at a drug house on Detroit’s east-side in 2007, when he was just 14-years-old.  They say convicted hit man Vincent Smothers confessed to the murders, and even told investigators where the murder weapon could be found.

Prosecutors insist Sanford is the right man, citing his confession and guilty plea.  Sanford has been in prison for five years, on a 37-to-90-year sentence, after pleading guilty to second-degree murder charges.

The judges who heard the arguments are expected to make a ruling within the next three-weeks.
