Upton confident in possible Farm Bill deal

Congressman Fred Upton

ST. JOSEPH (WKZO) -- Time is running short for Congress to reach agreement on a new five-year Farm Bill.  Lawmakers go on a month-long break this week, but Congressman Fred Upton of St. Joseph is confident a deal can be struck by staffers and other elected officials over the recess.

Upton is basing his hunch on conversations with House Speaker John Boehner and the chairs of the House and Senate agriculture committees, which include Michigan Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow.  The House plan only addresses farm programs, while the Senate bill tackles those and nutrition and food stamp issues.
