LANSING (WKZO) -- It was 102 years ago Monday that the state legislature officially approved Michigan's state flag.

The statement of approval was short and to the point saying, "The State flag shall be blue charged with the arms of the state."  On a blue shield the sun rises over a lake and peninsula as it shows a man with one had raised and the other holding a gun, representing both peace and his ability to defend his rights.

Other state symbols on the flag include a moose and elk while an eagle represents the United States.
