VIDEO: Kalamazoo River levels create concern for Kalamazoo Marathon safety

by

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Heavy rains brought flooding to much of west Michigan this week, and now higher water levels could present an issue for runners in the Kalamazoo Marathon.

Kalamazoo Marathon Organizer Blaine Lam says the area of conern is along the East Michigan Bridge where the Kalamazoo River has shown high increased water levels.  Lam says the way the bridge is set up now could present safety issues for runners and bicyclists on marathon day. Taking preventive precaution, the team of organizers will be putting down a four-hundred foot long strip of carpet to make sure runners don't slip and fall on the bridge.

Kalamazoo Marathon activities get underway Friday, May 3rd, and the run begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday, May 5th.

Watch above for comments from Kalamazoo Marathon race director Blaine Lam.
