ALLEGAN COUNTY (WKZO) -- Fire investigators now say it appears that careless smoking may have triggered a house fire near Dorr that killed a West Michigan man early Friday morning.
The family of 41-year-old Paul Smit says he stayed behind to try to extinguish the fire, instead of escaping with his wife and son, and it apparently cost him his life.
They found his body in the basement. They believe the floor apparently collapsed under him.
Firefighters say by the time they arrived, flames were already shooting through the roof of the multi- story home on 137th Avenue just west of Dorr in Allegan County. .
