KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- An Iraq War veteran was honored Wednesday by Congressman Fred Upton in his Kalamazoo office. Chad Dillon is now a political science student at Western Michigan University and served in the Michigan Army National Guard from 2004 to 2010. He spent a year in Iraq, driving trucks in convoys, and was given nine service medals by Congressman Upton at his office in downtown Kalamazoo.
He says there was a convoy everyday. Apparently the Military doesn’t just give out the medals soldiers win while they are in the service, they have to ask for the actual hardware, but it’s a lifetime offer. Dillon hopes other servicemen also pursue their medals. Upton during his career has held such ceremonies for soldiers going back as far as World War One.
Among the nine awards won by Dillon are the Army Good Conduct Medal; the National Defense Service Medal; The Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal and the Iraq Campaign Medal with a Bronze Star..
