Sandy is 'weird, unprecedented'

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- What's left of Hurricane Sandy is dumping rain and snow and blowing wind around much of the region.

Officials all up and down the east coast are assessing the damage. Some say it is devastating.

"The level of devastation at the Jersey Shore is unthinkable," Governor Chris Christie (R-New Jersey) told CNN.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said late Tuesday morning at least 10 have been killed in his city as a result of the storm.

AccuWeather's Maggie Johnson tells WKZO Sandy is an unusual storm.

"It was a hurricane that mixed with cold air, but you don't get snow with hurricanes," Johnson said. "This is just a weird, unprecedented storm."

West Michiganders saw snowflakes and freezing rain mixed in with rain from Sandy during the morning hours Tuesday.

That's nothing like the "Sandy effect" on West Virginia, where as much as 3 feet of snow was expected in the higher elevations, according to CBS News.

Johnson said the rain should clear out of Kalamazoo on Thursday morning, giving way to sunshine, though the temperatures will stay in the mid-40's.
