BATTLE CREEK (WKZO) -- A Battle Creek Police officer who initially looked like he might get just a slap on the wrist after driving drunk allegations, has now been charged with a felony that could end his career.

It was a case that generated charges of a police cover up in Battle Creek.Officer William Gensch has now been arraigned on a felony resisting and obstructing count and two misdemeanors, operating while intoxicated and failing to report a crash, after State Police had to be called in to investigate.

Witnesses say Gensch was driving at 100MPH when the car went off the road and began smashing into mailboxes and road signs early on the morning of July 31st. A breath test suggested his blood alcohol count was nearly three times the legal limit, but a PBT isn’t admissible in court.

Rather than get a proper test, Lieutenant Todd Madsen drove him and another officer who was in the car, home. Madsen was later demoted for that failure to perform his duties.

Gensch will be reassigned to desk duties until his court case is over.
