DETROIT (WKZO) -- Tougher graduation requirements have caused high school graduation rates to drop in Michigan.

According to the Michigan Consortium for Educational Research, tougher standards are causing lower graduation rates among lower-achieving students.  Officials say graduation rates have slipped from 49-percent to 44-percent.

Michigan adopted the tougher curriculum in 2006 with the goal of better preparing students for college.
