Like so many others, A-123 seemed like a good idea at the time

DETROIT (WKZO) -- It might have been another Solyndra but there were as many Republicans supporting the incentives for A-123 to build battery plants in Michigan as democrats.

Just a few years ago, the battery maker was one of a wave of advanced battery firms locating in Michigan thanks to the gas crisis, big government incentives and what was supposed to be the dawn of the electric car.

Someone forgot to tell consumers to start buying the vehicles, which have failed to reach projected sales, partly because of their limited range and partly because of their high up-front cost.

This week A123 Systems sought Chapter 11 protection from creditors and sold its Michigan factories to Johnson Controls, which is building its own battery plant in Holland.

Some GOP members seized on the bankruptcy as another Democratic failure to stimulate the economy, but Democrats countered that the plants had just as much Republican support.
